The concept of the film was born after creative siblings Jenny and Jack Dyson took the Gullwing for a spin and fell madly in love with the car. Rather than give it the usual petrolhead spin, complete with smoking tyre marks and skidding noises, the duo turn it into a character with a beating heart, a roving eye and an ability to bring the world to its bonnet without ever turning the ignition.

Directed by Nick Jones with cinematography by top car man Tim Green and sets illustrated by Emma Rios, the film features a cameo appearance by British star of the silver screen Emilia Fox, as well as other PENCIL friends and family. Jenny Dyson, Creative Director of PENCIL comments : “We wanted to surprise the viewer by having this incredible supercar not move at all. Instead, the GULLWING is at the heart of the story, playing cupid, watching as life unfolds throughout one day.”

THE SCENIC ROUTE builds on PENCIL’s successful ‘Fashion Highway Code’ Tweed Run series, another film project the brother/sister duo worked on together. Speaking about their latest endeavour, Creative Director Jack Dyson says: “Working with my sister again was hilarious – we take it in turns to be bossy but it averages out. It was incredible to share a concept like this, showing this special supercar in an unexpected way. Originality is key, and using mobile sets like this isn’t something we’ve seen used before.”

The siblings masterminded the creative together, using finger puppets in place of actors to block out early versions and humming the music. Jenny adds: “The choreography of stage scenery being brought to the car was the big hook. One of my favourite films is Ken Russell’s The Boyfriend. We certainly were inspired by his 1960s musical, which takes place entirely on a theatrical stage. The Scenic Route is lo-fi with a hi-octane supercar twist.”

Rob Halloway, PR Manager for Mercedes-Benz UK comments: “Most journalists want to drive our super sports cars as fast as possible, so the notion of keeping it parked and having its drivers’ world whizz by was intriguing. I think their idea has led to a fantastic film – it’s almost the antithesis to other supercar treatments. The result of their labours is full of character and fun - and for Emilia Fox, one of Britain’s top actresses, to get involved in the project was a real coup!”
